A small bench….slipcovered

I managed to do a tiny little makeover project for my cottage bathroom recently.  I’ve included the basic instructions in case you want to tackle something similar.

I started with this rather old and grubby little bench that I’ve been using as a vanity seat in my bathroom.

I wanted a cover that I could wash easily and feel clean and fresh.  So I decided on terry towelling, i.e. towels! I picked up two large white bath towels in the clearance section of HomeSense and I was well on my way.  Be sure to wash them in hot water and put them in the dryer, to avoid any shrinkage.

I measured the top and sides.  This is also where you figure out how long you want the slipcover to be.   I wanted to make sure the legs weren’t showing so I went almost to the floor.  I also wanted the yoke of the towel to line up on all four sides and for the finished end of the towel to become the hem.

I added 1/2″ for any necessary seam allowances, so on each side I added 1″ as there are two sides to sew and 1/2″ on the top of each side piece, which is sewn to the top of the bench.  The photo above shows the process of cutting out the sides from the towel.

Once all the pieces were cut,  I sewed the four sides to the top piece at the edge of the seat.

Then I proceeded to pin the sides together, being careful that my towel yoke (is that the correct term?) was lined up.   To do this I put the slipcover on the bench, inside out to ensure the fit was fairly tight.   I should also mention that I zigzagged about 3 times over each raw edge to help with fraying.  This was when I wished I had a fancier sewing machine or a serger but alas, I don’t.

And here’s the finished slipcovered bench.

It was pretty easy, only took me about 2 hours from start to finish and I zigzagged the edges on the remaining pieces of towels to use as rags.  Waste not, want not 🙂

And it’s done!

I’m excited to show you the pictures of the lovely Moen 90 Degree faucet which we my hubby installed in my daughter’s bathroom late last week.  Of course, I had to spruce up her bath with some new accessories and towels, as well as shopping my home for a few finishing touches.

Isn’t she a beauty!  My daughter is thrilled and loves how the water flows like a mini waterfall from the tap.

And for those of you who want to see the rest of the bathroom, here it is.  You can see the square nickel hardware here which inspired the choice of the nickel finished faucet. And no, it doesn’t always look like this…in fact, it rarely looks likes this…. So my daughter and I are enjoying it for the moment….and I mean moment.

Thanks again Moen and for quickly following up with me with the deck plate when I realized it was needed.

Faucet Love and a Fabulous Giveaway

Earlier this summer, I was asked by Moen if I would accept and review one of their gorgeous faucets, called the 90 Degree.  I, of course, being a faucet hound and loving Moen products, agreed at once.

Isn’t she a sophisticated beauty in all her brushed nickel glory.

As sparkly and pretty as the chrome is, I chose the brushed nickel finish as I wanted to install it in my daughter’s bathroom and she has brushed nickel handles and fixtures in there already.

Some photos from Moen’s website. I particularly like the second one 🙂

With it’s sleek modern style, it would fit right into any contemporary or modern bath.  I love square forms so I’m particularly pleased with this faucet and as the hardware in my daughter’s bath is also square, it fit the bill perfectly.

Once it arrived and hubby went to install it, he and I both commented on how heavy and durable it feels, a great plus in my book as the items that you touch daily should be substantial and well made.

This is where I am supposed to show you photos of how great the faucet looks installed in my daughter’s bathroom.  However, as in real life, not all installs go smoothly, and once he had removed the old one handle faucet (builder grade) we saw that instead of the one hole in the sink that we envisioned, we actually had three holes! Very close together but still three holes!  And of course, I hadn’t ordered the larger deck plate to cover three holes, I only had the smaller plate for one hole.

So, the plate is on order and you’ll see the installed faucet in a future post….very, very soon…I promise.

In the meantime, let’s talk about modern and contemporary bathrooms. Here’s my tips for creating a serene and modern bath:

1. Limit the number of finishes and repeat them.  For example, use the same tile for the shower and floor, even in different shapes or size it will still read as repeating

2. Square it off, in fixtures, hardware and sinks.

3. Clean front cabinetry with no moulding or ornamentation

4. Hidden or clean lined hardware

5. Glass shower walls

6. Limited colour palette, keep it simple. Less is more in modern styling.

Kitchen musings

This has been a busy and exhausting summer for my family.  But I’m happy to report that our cottage exterior is being stained as I write this, thankfully by someone else :-).  In my mind, at least, this means we are turning the corner on all the work that has to be done at the cottage. I hope I’m right.

We had a cabinet painter in to give us an estimate on painting the kitchen cupboards recently and it makes me excited to start thinking about what I want to do in the kitchen.

This is my inspiration photo.

For the countertops I am actually thinking of reversing the order that is shown here and doing a wood countertop for the main counter and a quartz marble look alike for the island.  I had wood countertops in my previous cottage and really loved them.

However, when I looked at the details of this kitchen and the paint colours (there are actually two different ones) used, they are much more gray and dark than what I want, though in this picture they don’t look that dark.

So I’m thinking of this colour for the cabinetry, which I think pretty closely matches the colour in the photo above (and I just realized it really matches the colours on my website..I guess I’m a blue girl).

I also have to try and source some twenty year old tile for repairs in one of the bathrooms and the sun room.  Fun, fun fun.

Fall can’t come soon enough for me. How’s your summer been? Exhausting or exhilierating?
