Updating some wicker chairs

Sorry for the long absence, like everyone else, life gets so busy.  We were lucky to get away again this winter, this time for a Caribbean cruise and then just like that we were right back in it. Add to that my hubby’s minor knee surgery and you can imagine why I haven’t been blogging.

I made an impulse fabric buy recently, as Tonic Living had a remnant sale and I am a SUCKER for pretty fabric.  They had a remnant of the fabric that I used to make throw cushions on my family room sofa, so I decided I should pick it up….I could make some more cushions or perhaps it would find a home somewhere else.

Isn’t it a pretty fabric?

Even a few years on I still love my throw pillows.

Family room

Once I received the remnant, all 1.5 yards of it, I had the brain storm that I could use it to recover my wicker chair seats in the sun room, as it is right off the family room. I have been wanting to recover those seats as the covers that came with the chairs were never “me”.  Sorry for the crappy before pic, as usual I forgot to take a before photo before I trotted them off to Wayne to be recovered. I guess I was a little anxious.  Anyways, there really are two of them in here….trust me, the cats each have one 🙂

I’m just not really a red person and I definitely wasn’t keen on that generic upholstery.  Anyways, I went off to my drapery/cushion maker, Wayne, and he informed me, as I had suspected, that I didn’t have quite enough fabric for the two chairs. So I decided to do a contrasting piping that would free up enough fabric to squeak out two cushions.

I decided to pull out the turquoise for the piping and found some fabric that had the texture and colour that I needed.

The cushions are now completed and look fabulous, Wayne did a great job as usual.  I am going to make up two small throw cushions to add to the back of the chairs and once they are done I’ll be showcasing the after pictures here.  Here’s just a little teaser.

Have a wonderful weekend, and please….tell Mother Nature that we have had enough snow! Bring on spring!

Wayfair feature on contemporary kitchen valances

Welcome back from a beautiful sunny and warm Family Day, for those of you in Ontario, at least.  We had a busy weekend celebrating our childrens’ 25th birthday with lots of family to help us. Then we headed off to a Senator’s hockey game, sadly they lost but like true fans, we still enjoyed the game.

I just have a quick post today about kitchen valances. I was asked by Wayfair a few weeks ago to give their consumers a bit of advice on how to choose kitchen valances for a contemporary kitchen.  The link is live today, so if you’re in the market for some kitchen valances to soften your kitchen, you can read about all the different styles and how to choose the best one for your home.

And here’s an adorable little video showing the different styles of valances.

Freshening up a dated kitchen

Just before Christmas, I had my entire house painted. That was quite a feat and boy did it make the house feel fresh and new.

Today, I thought I’d shown you my updated kitchen.  The paint colour went from a warm green Benjamin Moore’s Sag Harbour Grey to a soft blue/gray, Benjamin Moore’s Subway tile.  We also changed the backsplash to a warm grey subway tile. Something pretty transitional and a fresh change on the tumbled marfil marble I had previously.  I kept the beige/taupe flooring and the antique brown granite, so I chose a warm grey that ran through both the flooring tile and the granite.

This is the before.

I also updated the lighting in the kitchen, something I have wanted to do for a long while.  I went with a vintage brass finish that works well with the warm cherry cabinets.

Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

From my home to yours, I wish you the most merriest of Christmases and a very Happy and Healthy New Year!

Just a quick little note, have you guys seen the Artisto app? My friend, Donna discovered it and I’ve been a little obsessed lately with it.  Take a peek at what it did to some of my photos.

Update on my updates

So I thought I’d give everyone a little update on what’s been happening at my house this December. (Click here to see my previous post about what we were planning). We’ve had the painter in for 3 weeks now and it looks like we will be done early next week.  Phew! It’s been a bit of a long haul having the whole house painted at once, every night is spent putting a room back to together and taking another one apart.  I’m so looking forward to that being over.

So the living room, lower and upper hallways have been painted in Benjamin Moore’s Grandma’s China and doesn’t it look so very fresh and clean?

The kitchen is soft and lovely in Subway Tile.  I love the way the gray/blue looks against the warm wood.

We also decided at the last minute to do the den in the same colour, instead of Picket Fence.  Pics of that room later, we are still putting it back together.

I hate to play favourites, but the dining room is the best….shhh…don’t tell the others. This is Andes Summit and I’m in love with the colour, so rich and dramatic. Perfect for entertaining.

My master bedroom went just a bit darker than it was, as I was keeping the wallpapered accent wall.

The family room, sunroom, guest bathroom are also done but I haven’t got a great picture of them yet as we are having this done as well and the mess is encroaching on those two rooms.

I know, I know, I’m crazy for doing this now.  But really, it should all be done by next Tuesday….fingers crossed.
