Updating some wicker chairs

Sorry for the long absence, like everyone else, life gets so busy.  We were lucky to get away again this winter, this time for a Caribbean cruise and then just like that we were right back in it. Add to that my hubby’s minor knee surgery and you can imagine why I haven’t been blogging.

I made an impulse fabric buy recently, as Tonic Living had a remnant sale and I am a SUCKER for pretty fabric.  They had a remnant of the fabric that I used to make throw cushions on my family room sofa, so I decided I should pick it up….I could make some more cushions or perhaps it would find a home somewhere else.

Even a few years on I still love my throw pillows.

Once I received the remnant, all 1.5 yards of it, I had the brain storm that I could use it to recover my wicker chair seats in the sun room, as it is right off the family room. I have been wanting to recover those seats as the covers that came with the chairs were never “me”.  Sorry for the crappy before pic, as usual I forgot to take a before photo before I trotted them off to Wayne to be recovered. I guess I was a little anxious.  Anyways, there really are two of them in here….trust me, the cats each have one 🙂

I’m just not really a red person and I definitely wasn’t keen on that generic upholstery.  Anyways, I went off to my drapery/cushion maker, Wayne, and he informed me, as I had suspected, that I didn’t have quite enough fabric for the two chairs. So I decided to do a contrasting piping that would free up enough fabric to squeak out two cushions.

I decided to pull out the turquoise for the piping and found some fabric that had the texture and colour that I needed.

The cushions are now completed and look fabulous, Wayne did a great job as usual.  I am going to make up two small throw cushions to add to the back of the chairs and once they are done I’ll be showcasing the after pictures here.  Here’s just a little teaser.

Freshly Upholstered Mid-century Modern Chairs

I’m sharing a furniture makeover today that my son, Matt and his fiancé, Justin did recently.  I absolutely adore what they did and they agree to let me blog all about it.   So the story starts with my dad.  My dad received these chairs many, many years ago from his office.  They were renovating and the old pieces of furniture not needed were offered to the employees.   They resided in his home office for as long as I can remember and then later on moved into the finished basement.

The before shows off their nubbly orange mod upholstery, that just speaks to the 60-70’s era that they were part of.

There was even this label at the bottom of the chairs dated 1964 and from Kitchener, Ontario.

Since, my parents are downsizing and trying to unload a ton of furniture, Justin, who is a mid-century modern aficionado, quickly took these home.

Justin wanted a grey men’s suiting type fabric and I was fortunate enough to spy some during Kravet’s online sale, which we picked up for a song.  Then Matt and Justin went to work on them and this is how they turned out.

Sofa Love

Happiness is a new sofa with soft down filled cushions.

And I was happy to add a new coffee table as my cats had taken to using my ottoman as their scratching post :/

I’m now waiting for two chairs to arrive that were ordered recently, here’s a sneak peek at the style and the fabric.

Like Magic, New Chairs

Another chapter in my quest to reuse and update older furniture for our cottage.  This is how these two tub chairs look now.

These lovely little tub chairs, swivel and rock and fit our space perfectly, because they can be turned to face the fireplace or to face the tv.  Therefore, the decision was made to first off, raise them a couple of inches as they were very low, and secondly, to give them a fun, fresh makeover.  The upholstery had definitely seen better days.

And how they started out.

Since I had gone with white plain slipcovers for the sofa and love seat, I wanted to do these with a large graphic pattern.
I found this beautiful navy and white print….if you read my blog regularly you must realize by now..that I love blue and white…  And as a bonus, it is exterior fabric which means it won’t fade from the sun, won’t stain easily and will hold up to a busy cottage.  Perfect!

I decided to contrast this fabric with a solid and durable navy fabric.

My upholsterer did such a fabulous job. The navy piping is the perfect finishing touch and having them a little higher is perfect for my family.
